Historical background

In 1957 a need arose for caring for the ‘coloured’ mentally handicapped children in the Northern suburbs of Cape Town. Six years later, on the 18th May 1963, the Oasis Association for the Mentally Handicapped, officially opened Goodwood Oasis in a municipality house at the Goodwood bridge, near the bus terminus. Goodwood Oasis opened with 27 children ranging from the younger than 5 years to 20 years of age.

The Oasis Association approached the education department for a subsidy in November 1979, this was granted in January 1981. The staff of Oasis Training Center comprised of 6 teachers, 1 nursing sister, 1 administrative clerk, 1 cook and 2 drivers. The school had 74 learners.

Oasis Training Center moved to the Moravian school building in Clarke’s Estate in 1982, and in 1993 the school moved to its present premises in Belhar.

In 1997 the school became completely subsidied by the WCED, the name changed to Oasis School for LSEN and the Oasis Association withdrew their subsidy.
